Preserve the Name of Cerritos Park East

Preserve the Name of Cerritos Park East
The Issue
As a resident of Cerritos, CA, I am deeply concerned about the recent attempts by our city council to rename Cerritos Park East (CPE) after a living person. This move is not only against city policy regarding the naming of city facilities but also goes against the wishes of our community members. Cerritos City Council should not make any exceptions to the city policy in renaming any city facility.
The amendment to make an exception for this renaming was voted down 3-2 in our council meetings. Despite this decision, it was disturbing to see that one council member still pushing for renaming CPE or any other city owe facility by consensus. It’s on this Thursday, February 8, 2024 agenda again!
Our community has spoken loud and clear on this matter. The majority of public comments at council meetings were against the renaming of CPE. Similarly, most emails sent on this topic expressed opposition towards changing the park’s name. Social media platforms are also filled with comments from residents who want to preserve the name of our beloved park.
It's important that we respect and uphold the democratic processes in making decisions that affect us all as a community. We should not allow ‘exceptions‘ or bypasses in these processes just because some individuals hold different views. We do not support waving the policy in renaming city facilities.
We urge you - our elected officials - to listen to your constituents and respect their wishes regarding this matter. Please keep the name 'Cerritos Park East'. It is more than just a name; it represents history, memories and identity for many residents here in Cerritos.
We call upon all fellow residents who share these sentiments to sign this petition and let your voices be heard! Together we can ensure that democracy prevails in our beautiful city.
