My name is Courtney, and I, like many others in N. Superior, WI, rely heavily on the local bus route that connects us to essential services. In March 2027, the Blatnik Bridge is scheduled to close, and with it, our only accessible bus route will be discontinued. For those of us who depend on public transportation to reach workplaces, grocery stores, medical appointments, and schools, this change represents a significant threat to our daily lives.
The Duluth Transit Authority (DTA) has stated that commuters will need to walk up to a mile or more in extreme winter conditions to access alternative transportation. This expectation is not only unrealistic but dangerous, especially for the elderly, people with disabilities, and those with young children. Walking these distances in harsh weather can lead to severe health risks and increased instances of frostbite or hypothermia.
The impact of losing this bus route cannot be overstated. Losing reliable transportation could result in many of us losing our jobs, and consequently, our homes. The economic ripple effect would be devastating, affecting not only individual families but also local businesses that depend on our patronage.
