The Issue

My husband and I have been patrons of the Sylvia Beach Hotel since the early 1990s. For almost 30 years, this hotel has been more than a place to stay...it holds a special, sacred place in our hearts. The Sylvia Beach Hotel isn't merely a hotel, it embodies literary charm and quirkiness and connects book lovers from around the world.

The hotel has become a beloved gem with a 37-year long legacy that no other lodging establishment in Oregon or the United States can match. What other place has rooms named after authors; personal messages guests leave in the journals; and a warm, embracing library with hot spiced wine and a fireplace? Where else can you make deep connections with like-minded guests and create priceless memories?

Now the hotel has new owners, and we are deeply concerned their renovation plans to create "high-end amenities" will dilute the charm. We respect the need to modernize, but we also urge that they preserve the elements (such as themed rooms and the library) that draw a dedicated patronage from all corners of the world. The hotel's historical and cultural value outshines any modern amenities that might be added.

Therefore, we're pleading with the new owners to maintain and honor the literary charm, distinctiveness, and commitment to book-related culture that the Sylvia Beach Hotel has been representing for nearly four decades. This is an appeal for continuity and preservation...for respecting the affection and memories of dedicated customers...an appeal for understanding the true worth of the Sylvia Beach Hotel. We urge everyone who has cherished this establishment over the years to join us by signing this petition. Your signature could help maintain the literary magic that sparks life in the Sylvia Beach Hotel. Preserve its history. Preserve its charm. Preserve its story.
