Preserve the Historic Sam Houston Elementary School as a Community Performing Arts Facility

Preserve the Historic Sam Houston Elementary School as a Community Performing Arts Facility
The Issue
I am a proud resident of Conroe, TX, and like many others in our community, my family's roots run deep here. My grandmother, mother and I have all attended the Sam Houston Elementary School since it first opened its doors in 1938. This building is not just an educational institution; it is an integral part of our shared history and cultural heritage.
The school has been serving generations of Conroe residents as their first step into public education. After moving to Thompson Street recently, the former school building was repurposed as the Walter P. Jett Continuing Education Center.
Now there are plans to convert this historic structure into apartments. We believe that such a move would rob our community of a significant landmark tied to our collective memory and identity.
Instead, we propose that the former Sam Houston Elementary School be preserved as a performing arts facility for community use. As such, it could continue its legacy of fostering learning and growth while also providing space for artistic expression - something that can enrich lives across all ages.
We urge local authorities to consider this proposal seriously before making any irreversible decisions about this cherished local landmark. Let us honor our past while also investing in our future by preserving the old Sam Houston Elementary School building for communal use in arts education.
Please sign this petition if you agree with us that preserving historical landmarks like these are essential for maintaining community identity and fostering cultural enrichment.
