The Issue

As proud residents of a town built on native soil, we acknowledge the Pontiac Indian logo as not only a town symbol but a reflection of our history, heritage, and an homage to the Native American chief who once presided over this land. This symbol is more than just a logo - it serves as a constant reminder of the roots from which we've sprung, and the spiritual and cultural legacy left behind by the indigenous people of Pontiac.

Attempts have been made recently to have this emblem removed, calling it an antiquated embodiment. Ironically, these calls undermine the identity of the town and disrespect the cultural legacy associated with the land. Hundreds of us have grown up with and recognized the meaning and heritage of our beloved logo.

Respecting cultural heritage is crucial for the preservation of diverse societies and the prevention of cultural deterioration. According to a cultural heritage study by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), efforts should be implemented to safeguard and respect cultural emblems, symbols, and structures that bear significant historical or cultural relevance to a certain place or people.

Removing the Pontiac Indian logo, which in itself is a cultural landmark to the people of Pontiac and an emblem that fosters a sense of belonging among its residents, is a misstep. Let's not forget that the logo stands for unity, strength, and a testament to our history.

This is why we urge for immediate actions to halt the decision to remove the Pontiac Indian logo. Stand with us, voice your support, and sign this petition to preserve the proud heritage of our community, and honor the Native American chief who once ruled these lands. Together, let's keep history intact!
