Preserve the Fountain at Court Square Park

Preserve the Fountain at Court Square Park
The Issue
Petition to Preserve the Fountain at Court Square Park
We, the undersigned residents and supporters of Long Island City, call on Council Member Julie Won, the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation, and Community Board 2 to halt the planned demolition of the fountain at Court Square Park.
The fountain has long been a defining feature of Court Square Park, complementing the Courthouse and continuing its legacy as a symbol of the neighborhood’s history. Archival photographs dating back to 1924 confirm its presence and its significance to Long Island City’s vibrant past.
Many in the community have cherished the fountain for decades, as it evokes memories of family gatherings, community events, and peaceful afternoons. Its beauty adds to the park’s charm and offers a quiet place for reflection in the midst of city life.
The demolition plan, approved over five years ago, has only recently come to wider public attention. Since then, there has been a growing community response urging preservation—not demolition. Removing the fountain would erase an important piece of our shared heritage. We believe restoration is the better path—preserving its historical character while ensuring it meets modern standards.
We respectfully request the following:
- Immediate suspension of any demolition or alteration of the fountain.
- A full review and reconsideration of the park’s redesign plans, with active community participation.
Please join us in protecting this meaningful piece of Court Square Park. Sign this petition to ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy its history and beauty.
