The Issue

For over a century, St. Adalbert’s Church has stood as a cultural and spiritual beacon in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood—a testament to the rich legacy of immigrant communities who built this city. But right now, only a portion of this historic site may be protected.

On Tuesday, the Chicago City Council’s Zoning Committee will consider whether to landmark only the main church building, leaving the rest of the historic campus—the rectory, convent, school, and even the surrounding grounds—vulnerable to demolition or redevelopment.

This isn’t just a fight over bricks and mortar. It’s about protecting the soul of a community. The entire St. Adalbert’s campus tells the story of Polish and Mexican families, of Catholic tradition, of immigrant resilience and neighborhood unity. Separating the church from its surroundings would erase that story piece by piece.

The Archdiocese wants to sell the property to a non-denominational church that will preserve just the sanctuary. But generations of parishioners and local advocates, including the Society of St. Adalbert, are urging the City to landmark the entire campus—ensuring it remains a meaningful, connected space for future generations.

Landmarking is about more than preservation—it’s about respect. Respect for our shared history, for the communities who made this city, and for the beauty that continues to draw visitors and residents alike.

We call on the City of Chicago to landmark the full St. Adalbert’s campus—not just the church. Protect our past to inspire our future.
