The BYU-Hawaii Campus, Alumni, faculty, staff, or community NEVER saw these architectural drawings until they were released on August 28, 2023. The BYU-Hawaii Administration just provided a lot of Press Release games and manipulations before August 28, 2023. Their Press Release to the Church News is disingenuous and done through worldly tactics.
This is NOT TRUE. "Throughout the design process, the BYU–Hawaii President’s Council has held meetings and focus groups with students, faculty and the community. “We are grateful for the input and feedback we’ve received thus far,” said Kevin Schlag, BYU–Hawaii operations vice president. “This is a monumental project to remake a large portion of the BYU–Hawaii campus while maintaining the spirit and character of this special and historical place so dear to our hearts.”
The renderings include a new welcome center with the school’s iconic flag circle. The welcome center will hold historical, cultural and religious displays, including portions of the David O. McKay mosaic that is displayed as a significant feature of the current building, the news release explains."
The Church is worldwide and the First Presidency cannot supervise everything. We've been advised that a lot of decisions are based on trust that local leaders will choose the right.
What can YOU do to let President Nelson know what's really happening at BYU-Hawaii? Write a letter of concern and request his reconsideration:

It's up to individuals like YOU to share YOUR concerns with the First Presidency.
As suspected, the offensive David O. McKay Mosaic is removed. The Administration has been quoted from sources as being offended by the "colonial" injustices displayed in the McKay Mosaic. They were offended by President McKay raising the American Flag. They were offended by the Pledge of Allegiance. They were offended by the children "forced" to salute the American Flag. They were offended by "White Men imperialism" that causes "generational trauma." They were offended because "Hawaii is not part of the USA". (They forget it's not just about them.)
SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT ABOUT THIS McKAY COMPLEX PROJECT. POLITELY ASK THE FIRST PRESIDENCY TO INVESTIGATE AND RECONSIDER THE REMOVAL OF THE MCKAY FOYER AND MOSAIC BY HAWAIIAN SOVEREIGNTY EXTREMISTS.
Nobody is Perfect. No situation may be a 100% pono. To be on the safe side, the First Presidency needs to know this whole story!
These incidences show that the church can face different abuses in its history too.
- SOMEBODY SPOKE UP! Walter Murray Gibson was called by Brigham Young;Gibson purchased land on the island of Lanai with funds from the colony in his own name, but was excommunicated after an investigation by the church regarding accusations of preaching false doctrine, maladministration of the colony, and embezzlement of church funds.
- SOMEBODY SPOKE UP!
Philander Knox Smartt III arrived in Puerto Rico on July 1, 2013, as an energetic 43-year-old, and expected to preside over Mormon missionaries serving in that collection of islands for three years.
Ten months later, however, Smartt was dismissed as mission president and booted from the church for unspecified misconduct with multiple young female missionaries.
The victims, all older than 18, “chose not to pursue criminal charges,” LDS Church spokesman Eric Hawkins said in a statement in response to Salt Lake Tribune questions about the episode, and the Utah-based faith provided “ecclesiastical and emotional counseling” to the sister missionaries “who had been deceived and victimized.”
- SOMEBODY SPOKE UP! "
"Bishop was the president of Weber State College (now University) in the 1970s, a Mormon mission president in Argentina from 1979 to 1982 and president of the missionary compound (MTC)) until 1986, supervising thousands of young male and female missionaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
In November, the woman told BYU police she wanted to report being sexually assaulted at the center in 1984. Before she spoke in detail with officers, however, she visited Bishop in Arizona, posing as a writer who was interviewing former mission presidents."
SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT ABOUT THIS McKAY COMPLEX PROJECT. POLITELY REQUEST THE FIRST PRESIDENCY TO INVESTIGATE AND RECONSIDER THE REMOVAL OF THE MCKAY FOYER AND MOSAIC BY HAWAIIAN SOVEREIGNTY EXTREMISTS.
