Preserve the Confederation Trail for Walkers, Runners, and Cyclists

The Issue

ATV Enthusiasts Lament: “We pay taxes too, so we should be able to ride our ATVs on the Confederation Trail”

This is a ridiculous statement!  We all pay taxes, but that does not give us the right to do what we want, when we want or where we want. It also does not give us the right to step on other people’s rights!

Every year the Departments of Transportation and Tourism spends taxpayer money and time to aid the ATV associations in expanding their community of ATV trails through the woods, on public or private land, on backroads etc etc.

In 2017, the Evangeline ATV Association got a taxpayer ACOA grant of $29,607.00 to expand their ATV trail system by 47 kilometres. The province of PEI added another $11,860.00 for the project. These grants were paid for by all PEI taxpayers to allow the ATV community to expand their trail system which are exclusive to ATV enthusiasts.
Congratulations! We all need a separate place to ride, cycle, walk and run.

We propose that ATVs be treated like motor vehicles when it comes to usage on public trails such as the Confederation Trail. This would mean stricter enforcement of rules prohibiting ATV use on these paths and harsher penalties for those who disregard them.

Let us protect what makes PEI special – its natural beauty and spaces designed for communal enjoyment – from unnecessary harm caused by inappropriate vehicle use. Please sign this petition if you agree that we need stronger measures against ATV misuse on the Confederation Trail.

Ryder CyclesmithPetition StarterI came home from walking the trail one day, filled with frustration at the possibility of motorized vehicles on the Confederation Trail. As I spoke to more people, I realized many were not even aware that this could be a possibility.
