The issues we face are bigger than Taco Bell, bigger than East Hill. I have sent the following letter to members of City Council, Planning, Zoning, Building and the Mayor. In the meantime, I am still in contact with Taco Bell on a consistent basis to discuss the parts of this petition we still need to accomplish. They have not closed on purchasing the properties yet, and looks to be set for next week. ****************************************************** There is a wide gap between how our citizens feel about how we are building Pensacola, and your standards for development. Residents of Pensacola, are being blind-sided by approvals to tear down our trees, watching our historic fabric disappear, being exposed to toxic demolition dust, and projects that stick out like a sore thumb. I would be happy to work with members of Council, Zoning, Building and Planning any way I can to implement the following simple solutions as quickly as possible: 1) Go back to sending certified letters for public hearings. The self-metered postcards are not working, and people are not receiving advanced notice for public input on a consistent basis. We need a guarantee that these notices are being sent in a timely fashion with less risk for being lost in the mail, or arriving days after the meetings. 2) Review our city’s code for our trees, to understand if we are properly enforcing it. Approve language to either encourage their preservation or to deter their destruction. Our current system does not protect our trees, not even close. 3) Ensure safe demolitions in our communities. Require whole structure demolitions to be reviewed for public safety, and add a public hearing if it is more than one building being torn down. Require a public notice on site, with the actual demolition date. 4) Send certified letters if more than one lot is being combined into a development, so we can be aware of public hearings, even if it is not a zoning change. 5) Continue the UWF survey of historical structures to other communities.
