The Issue

As a musician and a passionate member of the Santa Cruz community, I am deeply concerned about the potential transformation of The Catalyst into a luxury apartment complex. The Catalyst is not just a building; it is a cornerstone of our city's cultural heritage, an emblem of artistic expression, and a beacon of inspiration for musicians like myself who dream of reaching the heights achieved by icons such as Neil Young, Nirvana, the Beach Boys, Tom Petty, and Pearl Jam — all of whom have graced its stage.

Since its inception in 1976, The Catalyst has evolved from a humble deli and coffee shop into a vibrant music venue that has been instrumental in nurturing both established and rising stars. Its walls resonate with countless memories, and its contributions to the underground music scene in Santa Cruz are immeasurable. As a musician, venues like The Catalyst symbolize the potential of our craft and offer a platform for talent to shine.

It's crucial to acknowledge that by 2026, The Catalyst will reach its 50th anniversary, making it eligible for historic status. This designation would ensure its preservation for future generations to experience and cherish the wealth of cultural value it has bestowed upon Santa Cruz. The Catalyst is not just a physical space; it's part of our identity as a community dedicated to the arts.

We cannot afford to lose such an irreplaceable venue to yet another luxury development. The rich history and artistic significance of The Catalyst must be safeguarded against the relentless tide of urban development. Transitioning The Catalyst into a historic landmark is a sustainable solution that honors its past and commits to the continuation of its legacy.

I urge the city of Santa Cruz, local preservation bodies, and cultural advocates to come together in recognizing and formalizing The Catalyst's historical and cultural status. By doing so, we not only cement our community's vibrant past but also pave the way for a future enriched by diverse musical talents.

Please join me in this crucial endeavor. Preserve The Catalyst for the artists of today and tomorrow, and sign the petition to protect our cultural heritage. Let us keep The Catalyst alive in Santa Cruz, where it belongs.

The Decision Makers

Fred Keeley
Santa Cruz City Mayor
Responded
The City of Santa Cruz recognizes the important role The Catalyst has played in our music and cultural scene, and we understand why there is strong public interest in its future. It is important to clarify the City’s role. The City is not involved in negotiations between the developer and The Catalyst, and the City cannot require that a private business remain in a specific location or be included in a future development. These decisions are governed largely by private negotiations, not City Council discretion. Some have asked whether a historic designation could stop the proposed project. Under California law, it would not. Historic designation does not automatically prevent demolition, and in this case would not change the City’s authority over the proposal due to the project’s status under state law. The Catalyst as a business is a cultural institution, but the building itself, is aging and in poor condition, as acknowledged by the venue’s management. The City’s Economic Development team is in communication with The Catalyst to explore ways to support the business and help it continue operating. The proposed project does show The Catalyst as a potential future tenant, should the developer and business reach agreement.
