The Issue

The Block is, without a doubt, the best food hall in Annandale, VA. It boasts an array of culinary delights and, not to mention, an amazing Poke restaurant that draws food enthusiasts from far and wide. Meanwhile, Bthrifty stands as the unrivaled thrift store in Annandale and is considered one of the top in all of Fairfax County. It serves as a vital place for our community to donate and purchase affordable clothing items.

The current plans to close The Block and Bthrifty to make way for new apartment buildings are not only disheartening but also overlook the cultural and social significance these establishments hold. Annandale’s rich diversity is greatly represented and celebrated at these places, where people from varied backgrounds gather for food, conversation, and community engagement.

Replacing these beloved community spots with residential complexes threatens to erase a part of Annandale's unique identity. We lose more than just businesses; we risk losing the community spirit they foster and the important services they provide. This shift will disproportionately impact low-income families and individuals who rely on Bthrifty for affordable clothing and household items.

In terms of local economy, The Block and Bthrifty attract visitors from neighboring areas, boosting local business revenue and ensuring job stability for their employees. These locations have become integral to our local economy, tourism, and community employment.

We propose that instead of shutting them down, the needs of existing businesses and newly proposed residential projects be harmoniously integrated. Consider alternative locations for apartment development that do not require sacrificing our essential community establishments. Community interests must be prioritized, balancing growth with preservation.

Annandale deserves thoughtful development planning that respects and upholds its vibrant social hubs. Let us preserve The Block and Bthrifty, ensuring they continue to be pillars of community life.

Please join us in urging the local government, developers, and zoning boards to reconsider these closure plans. Sign the petition to save The Block and Bthrifty and help keep Annandale a truly unique and welcoming community for all.
