Preserve Sellicks Beach's Scenic Heritage – Designate Open Space in front of Berg Herring
The issue
Please join us in signing this petition to designate Public Open Space on the land directly in front of Berg Herring Wines in the State Government’s Land Use Concept Plan for the Sellicks Beach Code Amendment.
Sellicks Beach is more than just a place - it's a sanctuary. The land in front of Berg Herring Wines, a cherished local landmark and heritage church-turned-cellar door, is under threat from a proposed housing development. This would obstruct the stunning views of hills and ocean that define the area’s character, hurt tourism, and negatively impact a valued local business.
Berg Herring is recognised as one of the best cellar doors in McLaren Vale, thanks largely to its iconic views. It has featured in promotional campaigns run by McLaren Vale Tourism, Fleurieu Coast Tourism, and the South Australian Tourism Commission.
Replacing this land with housing instead of open space would significantly harm Berg Herring’s appeal and economic viability. The business employs eight locals, supports nearby grape growers and suppliers, and contributes to regional tourism. At a time when small businesses are already struggling, this development could have lasting economic consequences for the area.
We are not opposing the entire development - we are calling for a more thoughtful, sustainable approach that respects existing businesses, local heritage, and the character of Sellicks Beach.
At least 12.5% of the development must be allocated as Public Open Space. We are asking that a portion of this be placed in front of Berg Herring to preserve the views, support the business, and ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy what makes Sellicks Beach and this venue so special.
By signing this petition, you are urging the State Government to designate this Public Open Space in their Land Use Concept Plan for the Sellicks Beach Code Amendment. Your support will help protect the heart and soul of Sellicks Beach for locals and visitors alike.
UPDATE!! The Sellicks Beach Code Amendment is now out for public consultation until Oct 16th. Giving them feedback via the Plan SA Have Your Say portal can help us make a big impact. Please take a minute to let them know that you: "want to have public open space designated in front of Berg Herring Wines on the Land Use Concept Plans."
