Preserve School Counseling Services in Robbinsdale School District

Preserve School Counseling Services in Robbinsdale School District
The Issue
We, the undersigned, are deeply concerned about the proposed budget cuts to essential support services within our schools, specifically the elimination or drastic reduction of funding for school counselors. As parents, educators, and community members, we strongly urge the Robbinsdale School Board, Superintendent, CFO, and others involved to reconsider these cuts and prioritize the mental health and well-being of our students.
Why This Matters:
School counselors play a vital role in supporting the emotional, social, and academic development of students. Research consistently shows that access to counseling services improves student outcomes, including academic success, emotional resilience, and social integration. Our community cannot afford to lose this critical support system.
My Story:
As a parent to children at the School of Engineering and Arts, my children have directly benefited from the services of our current school counselor, Mrs. Symington. Over the past few years, her support has helped us navigate challenges related to ADHD, schoolwork stress, and social situations. Mrs. Symington has been instrumental in ensuring my children and us feel understood, supported, and equipped to handle the pressures of school. Her guidance has made a significant difference in their overall success and well-being.
The Impact of Losing School Counselors:
If these budget cuts are implemented, our schools will not only lose a vital resource for students, but also risk leaving many children without the support they need to thrive. National statistics show that nearly one in five children face mental health challenges, and school counselors are often the first line of support. Eliminating these positions would be a disservice to our students, especially during a time of increasing emotional and mental health struggles among youth.
We Call for Action:
We ask the Robbinsdale School Board (and others directly involved) to:
- Preserve funding for school counselors to ensure that every student has access to the support they need.
- Prioritize mental health services in the budget, recognizing the critical role counselors play in student success.
- Explore alternative solutions to reduce costs without sacrificing the well-being of our students.
Every voice matters. Please join us in advocating for the well-being of our children and the future of our schools. Sign this petition to show your support for maintaining school counseling services.
Sincerely,
Cait Bielefeldt
