The Issue

Oak Flat is a cornerstone of cultural heritage, ancestral tradition, and environmental significance for the San Carlos Apache.

Located about an hour outside of Phoenix Arizona, Oak Flat is home to native burial grounds, coming of age sunrise dance ceremonies, food supplies and many other ancestrally significant resources. Despite this, it's under attack from mining operations that will and have already irreversibly damaged this land. The block caving method that is going to be used for this copper mine will leave a proposed subsidence crater 2 miles wide and 1,000 feet deep!

This land was transferred from federally protected land to private land as a “midnight rider” added into the 1,700 page National Defense Act of 2015. Since this sneaky land transfer native communities have been fighting non-stop to delay this massive copper mine from destroying their land. After being shut down in many court systems, including the supreme court, they are still fighting and so should we.

This isn't just about one location. It's a serious reminder of the ongoing struggle to protect Indigenous sacred sites across the country. By advocating for Oak Flat to return to federal protection we are standing up for not only indigenous religious rights but all religious rights. Advocating for Oak Flat is also standing up to multibillion dollar conglomerates. By signing this petition we ensure that Oak Flat and similar lands remain untouched for future generations of Apache and for immense biodiversity amongst native species.

Federal protection would recognize and honor the profound cultural connections these lands hold. It transcends temporary measures and provides a safeguard against industrial and commercial threats. This is a critical step in supporting Indigenous rights and preserving national heritage. It's about acknowledging the past and committing to a respectful future.

I urge you to sign this petition to demand that Oak Flat be granted federal protection once again. Let's transform awareness into action and ensure that future generations can experience the beauty and cultural richness of Oak Flat. Your signature can make a difference in preserving these sacred lands. Let's come together to champion this cause. Please sign the petition today!
