Preserve Quakertown's historical lands
The Issue
Quakertown, Pennsylvania, a town rich with American history, is under threat from Data Centers and needs your support to preserve its unique heritage. Located in Upper Bucks County, Quakertown was originally settled by members of the Religious Society of Friends, or Quakers, in the early 18th century. At that time, it was known as the "Great Swamp". It wasn't until 1803 that it was officially named Quakertown, and it became incorporated as a borough in 1855.
This quaint town holds a crucial place in our nation's history. During 1777, the town became a sanctuary for the Liberty Bell, hiding it from British forces. Additionally, Quakertown was a significant stop on the Underground Railroad, providing safe passage and hope for many seeking freedom from slavery.
Currently, parts of Quakertown are recognized as protected lands in Pennsylvania. Quakertown Swamp is a major wetland area and a crucial nature preserve. Given the importance of Quakertown area, The Southeastern Pennsylvania Groundwater Protected Area (SEPA-GWPA or GWPA) was created. It is an area of southeastern Pennsylvania where more stringent regulations apply to groundwater withdrawals than in the rest of the Delaware River Basin.
GWPA was created due to increased development in this region which was negatively impacting groundwater levels. Lowered water tables were reducing flows in some streams and drying up others.
This reduction in baseflows impacts downstream water uses, negatively affects aquatic life and can reduce the capacity of waterways in the region to assimilate pollutants.
Data centers consume enormous amounts of electricity and water, increase truck traffic and noise and diminish the natural beauty that so many people enjoy through nearby trails and open spaces. Our "Great Swamp" would be drained and wells will run dry under the pressure of a data center. Once the land is cleared and industrialized it can never be restored. We believe putting a data center in Quakertown Pa would bring lasting harm to our community, surrounding watersheds, and future generations.
We call upon local government officials, historical societies, and concerned citizens to champion the preservation of Quakertown's historical lands. This involves establishing stricter zoning laws to prevent unchecked development, securing funding for the conservation of historical sites, and raising awareness about the town's incredible historical significance.
