Why this petition matters

The proposal to re-open the Asphalt recycling business under new management in the Lowland Industrial area (165-157 Lowland Street) will put an end to the truck-free, dust-free, and quiet time that we've been experiencing since its closure in April.

Historically, this type of business has caused significant problems for our Town and Neighborhoods.

-Up to 400 tons of asphalt rubble is brought into this facility each day and inundates our streets and neighborhoods with traffic, dust, odor, and noise.

- This property sits on our Town's aquifer and drinking water resource for 3 of our Town Wells.  This poses significant concerns regarding contamination from heavy metals, Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and other contaminants from oil, gas, etc from weathered asphalt.  Our water quality monitoring process does NOT test for many of these.

- These operations abut the Bogastow Brook and threaten the wetlands and its water fowl and flora with these contaminants.  Additionally, the property and stormwater management ditch sit in the flood zone, which increases risks of stormwater runoff into the wetlands and brook.

This type of operation increases our town's expenses due to road repairs and utilization of our Town Officials to enforce permit requirements with little tax benefit for our Town.

Many Towns have prohibited this type of operation in water protection zones.  There is a good reason for this.......to protect Public Health.

Even when there is no threat to water, Other Towns make sure Asphalt recycling businesses are situated away from residential neighborhoods for other health concerns.

Please sign your name and address to support this Effort in Keeping our Town and Neighborhoods safe from pollution/contamination and Nuisance.  This petition will be presented to the Planning Board, Health Agent, and Board of Health as they decide the appropriateness of this business for the Town.
