The Issue

Students are affected directly as our personalization periods(Study Hall) are being threated to be taken away in this new policy by the Broward School Board, with Teachers experiencing a pay cut with the transition to 7-periods instead of the 8-periods (including the Study Hall).

For years, Broward County schools have successfully implemented essential personalization periods that allows for block schedules, that significantly enhances the educational experience for both students and teachers alike. Block scheduling, which allows students to attend fewer classes each day for longer periods, coupled with dedicated time for personalized periods, has led to improved focus, deeper learning, and a more manageable workload. In contrast, the recently proposed shift to a seven-periods without personalization threatens to undo these benefits and undermine the quality of education in our county.

The advantages of personalization periods and block scheduling are well-documented. Teachers have more time to cover complex topics, engage students in in-depth discussions, and utilize diverse teaching methods. Students benefit from having more time for comprehension and engagement, as well as the opportunity to pursue subjects with greater concentration. Moreover, under block scheduling, students have fewer transitions between classes, reducing stress and minimizing disruptions. Personalization periods (study halls) are necessary because they provide students with invaluable, structured time during the school day to consolidate learning, receive individualized support from teachers, and engage in self-directed study, all of which contribute to higher academic achievement and better stress management. When a student misses a class, they have that study hall to make up any work/tests with that teacher; but with the 7 periods instead, limit the possibility to make up anything that students miss during school hours.

The benefits of personalization periods are equally clear, offering a crucial buffer against student burnout and a dedicated time for academic enrichment or remediation. Research supports these observations; studies have shown that schools utilizing block scheduling often report higher student achievement and satisfaction. For example, a study published in the Journal of Education found that students in block schedules performed better on standardized tests and reported a higher level of understanding in subjects like mathematics and science.
Despite these clear benefits, the Broward School Board is considering reverting to a seven-period schedule without a personalization period (study hall), a change that could overwhelm students with shorter class times and more frequent class changes. Such a shift not only increases the likelihood of student burnout but also places an additional burden on teachers, who must prepare for more classes in a limited amount of time.
We urge the Broward School Board to retain the personalization periods and the eight periods that have proven effective and beneficial for our community. Changing to a seven period disregards the needs and well-being of both students and educators in Broward County.

By signing this petition, you are advocating for a superior education system that prioritizes student success and well-being. Please join us in urging the Broward School Board to preserve these vital personalization periods and block scheduling. Your signature can make a difference in maintaining a conducive learning environment for current and future students in our community.

Thank you!
