Preserve Parking on Broad Street, Augusta GA

Preserve Parking on Broad Street, Augusta GA
The Issue
For over 75 years, Luigi's, has served the Augusta community from our location on Broad Street. As a family-owned restaurant spanning four generations, much of our customer base includes elderly and handicapped patrons who rely on convenient curbside parking to enjoy a meal with us. However, the recently proposed renovation plan threatens this integral aspect of our business by replacing essential parking spaces with a bicycle lane.
The local government intends to revamp Broad Street—a main thoroughfare in downtown Augusta—by shifting its focus from car parking to bicycle lanes. While promoting cycling is admirable, this proposal does not align with the current needs of our community, particularly for the many small businesses that rely on convenient parking to attract and retain customers.
Statistics from nearby cities show that reducing parking in downtown areas can lead to a decline in business revenue, especially during evening hours when safety becomes a concern. Business owners in downtown Augusta are expressing their anxiety about this shift, fearing it could deter visitors, hurt sales, and ultimately slow down the revitalization efforts that our city has worked hard to stimulate.
Luigi's, alongside Merry's Home Furnishings, Tribeca Lounge, The Imperial Theatre, Frog Hollow Group, Nacho Mama's, The Sports Center and other downtown businesses and property owners, collectively believe that maintaining ample parking availability is crucial for encouraging consumer visits and fostering economic growth in our beloved downtown area. The proposed bicycle lane, while beneficial in some contexts, should not come at the cost of jeopardizing small businesses and our historical city's vibrancy.
We respect the initiative to enhance environmentally friendly transportation but call on the city commission to reevaluate their priorities and consider the immediate economic impacts of their decision. We propose looking into alternative routes that accommodate bicycles without displacing vital parking spaces, balancing both progress and preservation.
Please join us in urging the local government to amend their renovation plans and ensure that curbside parking remains on Broad Street, supporting community businesses and keeping our downtown vibrant and accessible. Sign our petition to make your voice heard.
