Preserve our Ontario Heritage lease agreement on the Kirkland Lake Mining Heritage Museum

The Issue

I am one of many residents of Kirkland Lake, deeply invested in the preservation of our local heritage. Our beloved Museum of Northern History is not just a building; it's an emblem of our community's rich history and culture. This designated Ontario Heritage site showcases art, geology, mining artifacts, wildlife exhibits, books, performances and hosts community events that enrich our lives.

The lease agreement between Kirkland Lake and the Ontario Heritage Trust (OHT), ensures that this vital cultural hub remains accessible to us all. However, this agreement is under threat. The potential loss would be devastating to our community as we stand to lose more than just a museum; we risk losing an integral part of our identity.

According to Statistics Canada (2016), Kirkland Lake has a population of approximately 7,500 residents who would be directly affected by this decision. Additionally, hundreds more visitors each year come to explore our unique heritage through the museum.

We urge you to consider the profound impact on both residents and visitors alike if this lease agreement isn't upheld. We ask for your support in maintaining this crucial link with our past so that future generations can continue learning from it.

The OHT lease agreement is rent-free. Kirkland Lake needs permission from the OHT for construction, alterations and remodelling to the exterior of the building.

Please sign this petition urging relevant authorities to uphold the lease agreement between Kirkland Lake and Ontario Heritage Trust for preserving Museum of Northern History.
