The Issue

Growing up in our vibrant community, I've always found solace and motivation in our DIY skate park. It's not just a place for skating; it's become a cornerstone of our community, bringing together people of all ages through shared passion and creativity. For me, personally, this skate park has been instrumental in redirecting my energy towards something positive and constructive. It gave me something to focus on, keeping me off the streets and out of trouble. Whether I was helping to set up the new concrete pour or just skating with friends, it provided a safe haven where I could express myself and feel a sense of belonging.

However, there's a looming threat that could dismantle everything we've built. The city and county officials are considering removing this cherished skate park—a community project born out of passion, hard work, and the desire to make a positive impact. These plans are blind to the countless benefits and opportunities our park provides to the local area. Removing it would strip away a place where youth can grow, learn, and develop new skills while staying engaged and giving them a sense of community pride.

Statistics show that skate parks contribute significantly to reducing juvenile delinquency rates by providing a safe and structured environment. According to the Tony Hawk Foundation, youth in communities with skate parks are more active, engaged, and are less likely to engage in criminal behavior. Our skate park serves this vital role and removing it without providing a viable alternative would be a disservice to our youth.

Moreover, the skate park is built through community effort, with funds raised by local residents and materials donated from nearby businesses. It stands as a testament to what can be achieved when we come together for a common cause.

I urge you to imagine this: without our skate park, countless kids lose an outlet and a safe space. The vitality it brings to our community could never be replaced by a city-sanctioned project because this park was created by us, for us, not by the bureaucratic machine.

I implore city and county officials to reconsider and explore possibilities that allow our DIY skate park to remain intact. We could work together to ensure compliance with safety standards while keeping its essence alive. Support this cause and help us preserve not just a skate park, but a longstanding community legacy.
