Steven Ryuma Hobbs is an American politician and military officer currently serving as the 16th Secretary of State of Washington, a role he assumed in 2021. A member of the Democratic Party, Hobbs was appointed by Governor Jay Inslee, becoming the first Democrat to hold the position since 1965. Prior to this, he was a member of the Washington State Senate, representing the 44th district from 2007 to 2021. In addition to his political career, Hobbs has a distinguished military background, serving as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Washington Army National Guard. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Political Science and a Master's degree in Public Administration, both from the University of Washington. His experience also includes roles as an officer in the U.S. Army and as a facilities manager.
