Preserve our beloved school logo
The issue
Newton Primary School is small but mighty. It has been a cherished part of our community, a symbol of unity and pride for generations of students, parents, and educators. On Friday 7th August it was announced there would be a vote on a new logo design —a move that has sparked considerable passionate discussion amongst current parents and the local community.
It was put to a public vote, and had a lot of comments questing why it was even considered. Monday 10th August the voting system was scrapped and redone, a new email stating it was to be parents of current students only. Registering your name and children’s name for your vote to count. This restriction means that the voices of many, such as previous students, previous parents and the community were unjustly silenced.
Not only does this voting process exclude vital members of our community, but it also ignores the emotional attachment people have to our current logo. It’s more than just an image; it embodies our collective memories and shared experiences. Alumni can instantly connect with their past just by seeing that emblem, while current students proudly wear it on their uniforms.
When valid concerns were raised regarding the financial impact on families, a safety risk for the children wearing these very largely printed Logos showing where they attend school while out and about after school, it was largely dismissed.
This is not just about a logo; it's about what that logo represents—a community built on equity, inclusivity, and shared history. We urge Principal Amy to reconsider her approach and listen to the community that the school belongs to. Let's ensure that any future decision truly reflects the will of the entire school and surrounding community.
