Preserve Osage Park, Danville CA

Preserve Osage Park, Danville CA
The Issue
We the citizens of the town of Danville, wish to preserve Osage Station Park as the balanced multi-function facility it has been for 40 years and say “no” to the Town’s proposed pickleball venue of up to 8 courts.
We appreciate the growing demand for pickleball, but Osage is not a suitable place for a pickleball venue, due to neighborhood safety and noise concerns, and negative impacts on the park. Communities across the nation have learned the hard way that pickleball is not suitable for residential areas.
CHILD & PEDESTRIAN SAFETY - max usage could attract 300+ users daily and would:
- Compound existing traffic and congestion issues for 1,335 kids traveling to school per day including. Charlotte Wood (875) and John Baldwin (460).
- Increase safety risks in crossing nearby streets, tallied at 525 (K-8) per day.
NOISE - Pickleball is a fun but loud sport due to the high decibel (db) and pitch of plastic balls pinging against hard paddles, plus the associated crowds it draws.
- Pickleball courts in Walnut Creek (8 courts) and Concord (14 courts) yield ~90 db at the court perimeter and ~80 db within 100 feet.
- These db levels are consistent with a March 2022 LA Times article, “Pickleball noise is fueling neighborhood drama from coast to coast”, citing peaks of 85 db from 50+ feet away.
- Pickleball can be heard from several hundred feet, making residential areas like Osage a recipe for disaster.
- Pickleball conflicts and closures in residential areas are happening in Berkeley, Pacific Grove, Walnut Creek, Southern CA and other areas nationwide.
Solution: Locate this venue in an appropriate location that addresses all these
issues such as Sycamore Park.
