Memorial Park is an asset to the community. These fields have not only been a place where the community enjoys outdoor activities, but they have also provided a natural green oasis where time slows in our bustling city. The city council's plan to replace this cherished natural grass with artificial turf is alarming to many who value the health of our community and environment.
Artificial turf is known to pose various health risks. According to a study by the Environmental Protection Agency, temperatures on artificial surfaces can be up to 60-90 degrees hotter than natural grass. The surface can get dangerously hot under the sun, posing burn risks, heat stroke, joint stress and an 16% increase in injuries. With California's increasing temperatures, this is a significant concern for all park-goers. Plastic grass also aids in prolonged allergy seasons. Without natural grass the ecosystem will stall in absorbing Carbon Dioxide and producing oxygen. Pollen thrives on C02 which we have seen and currently suffer from early pollen booms, super pollen and extended pollen seasons.
Moreover, the environmental impact of artificial turf cannot be understated. Unlike natural grass that offers carbon sequestration, artificial turf contributes to the accumulation of microplastics was directly into the Santa Monica Bay, adversely affects local biodiversity, and requires periodic replacement. Each time the turf is replaced, it contributes to landfill waste, furthering our ecological footprint. Turf made from recyclable materials gives the false sense that artificial turf if recyclable; it is not. In a time where Farm to Table is of great importance for our carbon footprint; we need to embrace a lifestlye of No Turf in our Surf.
The switch to artificial turf would also eliminate the natural beauty and the psychological benefits that greenery provides. Research from the American Psychological Association highlights that natural green spaces enhance mental well-being, reduce stress levels, and improve mood. For residents of Santa Monica, preserving these green spaces is crucial for maintaining our quality of life.
We urge the city council to reconsider their decision and keep Memorial Park's fields as natural grass. Our flawless fields are well maintained and cared for by our field maintenance crew. There is no reason to fix what ain't broke. Grass is sustainable, self healing and biodegradable. Hiding behind the claims artificial grass is "water saving", "cost reducing", "promotes playability" and is "low maintenance" are stale and misinformed. When turf is installed properly there needs to be an irrigation for the water cannons that are suggested to be installed in order to cool the plastic down every 20 minutes/as needed. During these times of use are peek hours when the city asks the community for water conservation hours between after sunset to before sunrise. Without these water cannons (aka sprinkler systems).
Sign this petition to let your voice be heard and keep Memorial Park a safe and natural haven for all in Santa Monica. Together, we can protect our beloved green spaces for future generations.
