The Issue

Growing up in Gahanna, Ohio, I have always felt a deep connection to the historical landmarks that define our community. Unfortunately, over the years, many of these historical buildings have been demolished, erasing tangible links to our past and tarnishing our collective history. One such symbol that yet stands proud is Lincoln Hall, built in 1927 on the grounds of Gahanna Lincoln High School. Nearly every Gahanna Lincoln graduate from 1928 to 2028 will have attended class in this iconic structure. It is not merely a building; it is a living story of our community.

Lincoln Hall is a rare gem in Gahanna, a city that has seen much of its architectural history disappear. Its presence on one of the city's major corners serves as a potent symbol of the Gahanna-Jefferson Community. Its location would not interfere with the new Gahanna Lincoln High School being built nearby, which means the argument that it hinders educational development is unfounded. Instead, its preservation offers an opportunity for creative repurposing.

Imagine Lincoln Hall as a community center, a museum, or a venue for town meetings. Its historical significance could be harnessed to enhance our sense of community and shared history. The potential uses are limitless if we choose to preserve this piece of our heritage.

Esteemed architectural historians and preservationists support the idea that buildings like Lincoln Hall contribute greatly to the cultural and educational landscape of a community. Furthermore, restorations and adaptive reuses of older buildings have been shown to be environmentally friendlier, requiring fewer resources than demolishing and constructing anew. This adds another layer of significance to preserving Lincoln Hall.

Saving Lincoln Hall would honor the lives and stories of all those who have passed through its corridors and would serve as a beacon of the rich history that shaped our community. The costs associated with its preservation could potentially be offset by grants and sponsorships dedicated to maintaining our national heritage. Community engagement initiatives could foster collaborative efforts in preserving the building for future generations.

I urge you to join me in this endeavor to protect one of Gahanna's most precious historical landmarks. Let us stand together to ensure that Lincoln Hall remains a part of our community's legacy, ready to inspire countless future generations who pass through its doors.

Please sign this petition to preserve Lincoln Hall and protect our cherished history. Together, we can make a difference.
