Preserve Konkani as Goa's official language
The Issue
Growing up in the beautiful and culturally vibrant state of Goa, we have always cherished Konkani as an important part of our linguistic and cultural heritage. It is a language through which generations of Goans have expressed their thoughts, traditions, music, literature, and way of life.
Konkani in Devanagari script was recognised as the official language of Goa under the Goa, Daman and Diu Official Language Act, 1987. The Act also provides for the use of Marathi for official purposes. This existing legal framework reflects the importance of both languages, while recognising Konkani as Goa’s official language.
Recent demands for granting Marathi official state-language status in Goa have brought this issue into public discussion. We believe that any proposal to alter the existing official-language framework must be considered carefully, with due regard to Goa’s history, cultural identity, and the provisions of law.
Konkani is more than a means of communication. It is an important expression of Goa’s identity and heritage. Its preservation and promotion help ensure that future generations remain connected to the language, traditions, and cultural values of their ancestors.
We therefore urge the Government of Goa to:
Preserve Konkani in Devanagari script as the official language of Goa.
Respect and uphold the existing provisions of the Goa Official Language Act, 1987.
Promote the use of Konkani in administration, education, literature, and public life.
Encourage the preservation of Konkani in all its linguistic and cultural forms.
Ensure that any proposed changes to the official-language framework are subject to proper public discussion and consideration of Goa’s linguistic heritage.
We recognise and respect the importance of Marathi and other languages spoken in Goa. However, preserving Konkani’s official status is essential to maintaining the linguistic identity that forms an important part of Goa’s heritage.
