We are the Perth Indoor Bowling Club, a community deeply rooted in the history of our beloved city. Our club is not just a place to play; it's a sanctuary for people of all ages and abilities, where they can engage in friendly competition and social interaction. The sport we love is indoor, shielding us from the unpredictable Scottish weather and allowing our older members to maintain their physical and mental health well into their 90s.

However, recent plans by the Perth & Kinross Council threaten to dissolve our cherished institution. The council has agreed on plans to consolidate three sports centres into one, accommodating curling and swimming but leaving out indoor bowling. This decision disregards not only our rich history but also the unique benefits that indoor bowling provides for its players.

Indoor bowling is more than just a game; it's an essential part of life for many residents of Perth. It promotes physical activity among seniors who might otherwise struggle with outdoor sports due to weather conditions or mobility issues. Moreover, it fosters social connections that are vital for mental health - especially important considering that loneliness affects around 9% of people aged 65 or over in Scotland (source: Age UK).

We urge the council to reconsider this decision and include provisions for indoor bowling in their consolidation plan. Let us continue providing an inclusive sporting environment where everyone can participate regardless of age or ability level.

March 2023 update

We received an email on Monday 25th to inform us that indoor bowling would cease on Friday 5th April ( less than 2 weeks notice). The bowling hall will be repurposed as a gym facility to replace Bells Sports Centre, which is still closed due to the flood.
