Preserve Human Checkouts: Support Older Adults and Strengthen Community in Our Supermarket

The Issue

We, the undersigned customers and residents of Bridgwater, and others who regularly visit our local supermarkets, demand that supermarkets protect human-operated checkouts in all stores, especially in Bridgwater.

Why This Is Important:

With the growth of self-service checkout systems, older people in Bridgwater are often left behind when it comes to grocery shopping. Although these machines facilitate fast and easy checkout for many shoppers, they create barriers for many others.

We're not asking supermarkets to reject modern technology or resist change. We're asking for supermarkets to provide equal accessibility and dignity, primarily for older shoppers, who may:

-Have difficulty using self-service machines: Some older people may struggle to navigate touchscreens or understand the self-scan process.

-Prefer the in-person interaction: Many senior citizens see grocery shopping as an opportunity to socialize with staff or other shoppers.

-Need assistance from trained employees: Many older adults lack the independence required to use self-checkout machines and may only feel comfortable checking out after being assisted by staff.

Our Demands:

• Guarantee at least two human-operated checkouts in every store, especially during peak hours.

• Ensure staff receive training to respect, acknowledge, and provide assistance to people who prefer to avoid self-service checkouts.

• Maintain in-store designs that accommodate people of all ages.

• Consult older staff members and customers when making decisions regarding new machines, layouts, or technology.

Supermarkets should keep in mind that human checkouts offer invaluable social and communal experiences that many in-store shoppers seek to enjoy. At the same time, they present opportunities for job-seekers looking for job openings throughout the region.

We call on all supermarkets to be mindful of the potential consequences their decisions will have on older people not only in Bridgwater but throughout the country.
