The Issue

Located in Newport News, VA and built in 1769 Endview Plantation has been a sight for many eyes young and old, originally called the Harwood Plantation this sits on 24 acres of beautiful Virgina soil. The city has plans to develop new 620-unit housing on Yorktown Road in the vacant plot at the plantation. It has served as a hospital and headquarters for Confederate Generals McClaws and Toombs in 1862. The property and surrounding land has been apart of the Harwood and Curtis families for decades. Dr. Humphrey Harwood Curtis acquired 910 acres in 1861 also serving as a volunteer soldier in the Warwick Beauregards. This important place of American history was later sold to the city in 1995 after the having been in the Curtis family passed down to decedents of the original builder William Harwood.

My immersive experiences at Civil War reenactments here have kindled a deep love and appreciation for the Endview Plantation and its history for me. As someone who has experienced the profound sense of connection this historic site offers, I am writing this petition to amplify our collective voice in safeguarding this heritage and the land.

Endview Plantation, a national landmark since the Civil War and Revolutionary War needs our immediate attention. The proposal to convert this historic site and its surrounding land into housing developments threatens to erase an essential fragment of our national heritage. The National Trust for Historic Preservation recognizes that historic sites such as Endview Plantation act as tangible reminders of our past that shape our identity.

Each encroachment upon these historical sites chip away at our collective memory, losing bits of history that cannot be recovered. Encroachment on just one percent decreases the integrity and historical accuracy of such sites by twenty-five percent, devastating their educational potential.

By signing this petition, you are standing with history, preservation, and education. You are saying no to the obliteration of our past before it's too late. Please, join us in calling upon the local council to revoke any permissions for housing developments within the boundary of Endview Plantation. It is a step towards preserving our shared heritage for future generations to appreciate and learn from. Sign the petition today, because history cannot protect itself.
