Preserve Gullah Geechee History at Riverfront Park

Preserve Gullah Geechee History at Riverfront Park
The Issue
Hey reader,
I pray you are well. I created this petition to bring your attention to an important matter concerning Riverfront Park and the historical significance of the Dead House.
The Dead House, believed to be the oldest structure in North Charleston, holds a deep and mysterious history. Its bricks, bear the fingerprints of enslaved Gullah Geechee people, mainly churn (children) who contributed to its construction. These imprints tell a powerful story and mark left by those who built it.
Last year, I petitioned park rangers for a memorial garden near the Dead House, that request was denied but an agreement on a educational place card was reached. However, upon my recent visit to the park I was disappointed to see a new sign that simply reads "The Dead House" had been installed.
While we appreciate the initial agreement to install an educational place card, we are disheartened by the broken commitment. The recent installation of a simple “Dead House” sign falls short of the educational context we envisioned and agreed on. The park ranger is now saying that in order for a proper sign to be installed that we will have to bring this issue to the mayor.
Our community believes that accurate representation and inclusivity are essential for healing historical wounds. We seek the following actions:
1.Educational Place Card:/ Interpretive Sign
Fulfill the commitment made for an educational place card that shares the story of Gullah Geechee people and our impact on the city.
2. Memorial Garden:
To honor the labor and sacrifices of our ancestors. And to allow community members to reflect, learn, and connect with our shared history.
3. Acknowledgment of Black Sailors
Include information about Black sailors and their vital roles in shaping our local marine history.
4. Indigenous Communities:
Include information about Indigenous people who lived here before it was turned into rice plantations.
5. Erect a statue that celebrates African and Indigenous heritage.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to working together to honor our heritage and create a more equitable experience at Riverfront Park.
