I am a resident of the Methodist Town neighborhood in St. Petersburg, Florida, and like many others here, I cherish the green spaces that define our community. These spaces are more than just patches of grass; they are integral to our collective well-being, offering a sanctuary for families, a playground for children, and a gathering place for neighbors. Losing them would mean losing a part of our identity and the unique charm that our neighborhood offers.

Recently, there has been a proposal to remove park protections from all nine city-owned lots in Methodist Town. This proposal has come as a surprise to many of us, as there has been little to no meaningful engagement with the community regarding this critical issue. We believe that any decision impacting our neighborhood should involve our voices and consider our needs. The city council member representing our district was absent when the issue was discussed, but the remaining council members pushed forward anyways. 

We understand the importance of developing affordable and workforce housing. However, it shouldn't come at the expense of green spaces that serve as the lungs of our neighborhood, crucial for both environmental sustainability and community health. Balance and thoughtful planning are key. We urge the St. Petersburg City Council to acknowledge the community's concerns and engage in a constructive dialogue with residents.

Statistics from the Environmental Protection Agency highlight the benefits of urban green spaces, noting their role in reducing pollution, cooling city temperatures, and improving mental health among residents. Methodist Town should not lose these vital benefits due to hastily made developments. Instead, we must collaborate and find solutions that accommodate new housing while preserving the fundamental essence of our neighborhood.
