The Issue

Golf Mill Shopping Center is more than just a collection of shops and eateries; it is a cornerstone of our community, a symbol of Niles, and a testament to Americana. For generations, it has been a place where families gather, friends meet, and memories are made. It is important not only for the retail opportunities it provides but as a social hub that fosters connections and camaraderie among residents.

The redevelopment plans threaten to erase this cherished space, replacing it with faceless modernity that lacks the soul and history embedded within the walls of Golf Mill. While progress and development are essential, they should not come at the cost of losing landmarks that define our community’s identity. Many local families and community groups have held events in the center, enjoying the familiar environment that feels like home. Once this place is gone, so too will the unique community spirit that it embodies.

The redevelopment also threatens the financial health of the village; 96 million dollars in TIF funding that can be better used elsewhere and a redevelopment price tag overall of 440 million dollars.

Golf Mill Shopping Center was one of the first of its kind in the Chicagoland area, opening its doors in 1960. Its mid-century architectural style, specifically the 9 story golf ball shaped professional building designed by famed architect Edo Belli, is an example of innovation for its time and a piece of history that deserves to be preserved for future generations. Turning Golf Mill into a historical landmark would ensure its preservation, allowing it to continue to serve as a functional and historical community asset.

We call upon the local government officials and preservation societies to work together with the citizens of Niles to stop the proposed redevelopment. Instead, let's focus on maintaining and restoring Golf Mill Shopping Center, respecting its historical significance while upgrading the facility for modern use.

Join us in voicing our concerns and in our quest to preserve the heart of our community. Your support is crucial in making sure our voices are heard and that Golf Mill remains a beacon of our shared heritage.
