Preserve Elementary School Counseling Positions in Ventura Unified School District

The Issue

My daily life involves witnessing the extraordinarily deep impact that school counseling positions have in our Ventura Unified School District. These positions are not just resources—they are lifelines. They help students navigate the complex terrain of emotions, build healthy relationships, and develop essential coping skills that will serve them for life. These invaluable roles address emerging issues in our youth, before they evolve into larger problems that can impact academic success and behavior.

However, these positions are currently facing the threat of extinction. This is why I assertively cry out for the need to safeguard school counseling positions, which are proving to be the very backbone of wholesome childhood development and mental well-being.

According to the American School Counselor Association, the student-to-counselor ratio in U.S. schools is an imbalanced 464-to-1, this is far from the recommended 250-to-1. These numbers starkly emphasize the value and need for maintaining and increasing school counseling staff rather than cutting them.

School counselors in our district, much like around the nation, play a substantial role in promoting academic achievement. Students who have access to counseling services show better academic performance. Furthermore, schools with more counselors have lower rates of disciplinary incidents, providing a peaceful and conducive learning environment.

With this in mind, it becomes evident how crucial it is to preserve these positions for the wellness of our students and overall success of our academic institutions. I urge you to consider the far-reaching implications that these reductions will have, not only on current students but on the fabric of our future society. Sign this petition to join the collective voice advocating for the preservation of elementary school counseling positions in Ventura Unified School District.
