The Issue

To: Wilmington City Schools Board, Mayor of Wilmington, OH, and Wilmington City Council

We, the undersigned, are community members, alumni, parents, and concerned citizens who recognize the historic and cultural significance of East End Elementary School in Wilmington, Ohio. As we face the impending closure of this venerable institution, we urge the Wilmington City Schools board, the Mayor of Wilmington, and the Wilmington City Council to open a comprehensive public discussion on the future of East End Elementary School. Our goal is to explore viable options for preserving the building and repurposing it in a manner that benefits our community and honors its heritage.

Our Proposal:

We propose that the Wilmington City Schools board, together with the Mayor and City Council, engage in an open, transparent, and public discussion process to explore the following:

Potential avenues for repurposing the East End Elementary School building in ways that can serve the community, such as converting it into a community center, affordable housing, arts and culture hub, or other community resource.

Opportunities for incorporating community input and feedback into the decision-making process regarding the school’s future.

Strategies for preserving the historic integrity and architectural significance of East End Elementary School while adapting it for new uses.

We Believe:

The East End Elementary School building has the potential to continue serving as a vital resource for the community.

Public discussion and community involvement are essential in making decisions that affect our shared heritage and future.

By working together, we can find innovative and sustainable ways to preserve and repurpose East End Elementary School for the benefit of all.
