The Issue
In our small coastal town of Manchester-by-the-Sea, the 22 Union Street building, historically known as the Cargo Unlimited Building, stands as a testament to the character of our town . For generations, this iconic structure has been a pivotal element of our community’s identity. Today, this cherished landmark faces the threat of demolition, and we cannot stand idly by and let it disappear.
A private developer has proposed demolishing this historic building to make way for two townhouses with parking beneath. These new constructions not only threaten to erase an integral part of our town's history, but they also do not align with the needs or the character of our community. These townhouses are neither affordable nor are they envisioned to include essential commercial spaces on the first floor, which would benefit our town’s vibrant community.
We urge the Manchester-by-the-Sea Historical Commission to deny the demolition request. Let's work together to explore preservation and adaptive reuse strategies that uphold our town's historical integrity while meeting contemporary needs.
Protecting our history is vital for our community's collective future. Support the preservation of 22 Union Street. Sign this petition to preserve our heritage and maintain the unique character of Manchester-by-the-Sea.
