Preserve Baldwin City Lake: Restore the Dam, Not Private Development

The Issue

The history and serene beauty of Baldwin City Lake is under threat, and we must protect it. As long-time residents of the city, we value this beautiful peaceful place that has served as a communal treasure for countless years, one that has graciously been a part of our lives and community.

For lifetime dwellers and new visitors alike, the lake, originally built in the year 1930, holds a unique charm. The dam, still in good condition, is a testament to the lake's resilience. However, a significant portion of the spillway was damaged during a heavy rainstorm in 2019. Prior to this, the spillway, as part of a Boy Scouts project, was enhanced with the addition of concrete block stepping stones in the mid-1990s, offering an enjoyable way to cross without getting wet and serving as a key component of the lake's unique features.

We stand now at a crossroads, with the city council deliberating on whether to rebuild the dam and restore the lake or sell this priceless asset for private development. This decision will shape the future of our community. Selling the property to private developers will undoubtedly transform the landscape and potentially rob us of our communal space. Rebuilding the dam and restoring the lake is not only vital for preserving our shared historical site, but also for maintaining the rich biodiversity within and around the lake.

We call on the Baldwin City Council to prioritize the restoration of Baldwin City Lake over private interests. Let's stand united in preserving this invaluable historical, environmental, and communal landmark. Please sign this petition to voice your support in saving Baldwin City Lake.
