Preserve A/B Block Schedules and Keep Study Hall in Broward County Public Schools

The Issue

My name is Mikyle J. Sukoo, and I am a dedicated student advocate in Broward County Public Schools. Many people know me from my previous petition, “Allow Cell Phone Use During Lunch for BCPS Students,” which successfully helped students regain their freedom to use their devices during lunchtime. That victory proved something important: when students speak up together, real change happens.

Today, I am raising my voice again — not just for myself, but for every student in BCPS who will be affected by a major scheduling change that most of us never asked for.

BCPS is considering eliminating the A/B block schedule and removing study hall from our school day. These changes would dramatically increase daily workload, limit our time to catch up on assignments, reduce flexibility for students with jobs or family responsibilities, and add more stress to an already overwhelming academic environment.

Why This Matters
A/B schedules help balance our workload. Instead of rushing through 6–7 classes every single day, the block schedule gives us time to focus deeply in fewer classes.
Longer periods support real learning. Teachers can run labs, group projects, and meaningful lessons — not rushed, surface-level instruction.
Study hall is essential. It gives students time to complete homework, review for tests, decompress, and stay academically on track.
Removing these supports will only increase stress, especially for students involved in clubs, sports, jobs, or helping their families at home.
Just like the phone policy during lunch, this decision affects our daily lives and our mental well-being. And just like before, students deserve a voice.

What We’re Asking For
We are calling on Broward County Public Schools to:

Keep the A/B block schedule in place.
Keep study hall available to students.
Involve students in decisions that directly impact us.
BCPS students are hardworking, responsible, and capable. We deserve a schedule that supports our success — not one that adds unnecessary pressure or reduces our ability to thrive.

Please sign and share this petition.
Let’s stand together once again and make sure student voices are heard loud and clear.
