Benefits of TRJR

1. The proposed large, central reservoir is actually a natural valley 30 km long and 1 km wide which encompasses the headwaters of the Elbow, Sheep and Highwood rivers at a strategic location. 2. It can be used to mitigate floods and store water when conditions warrant. 3. It can be implemented in stages and offers the quickest possible protection to communities along the Elbow River, once Phase 1 (consisting of a tunnel) is completed. It is estimated the tunnel would only take 2 - 3 months to complete once environmental approvals are provided. 4. Located on Crown land, only one private landowner has been identified; no landowners would be displaced, no utilities or roads would need to be relocated. 5. TRJR is estimated to safely hold 10 times the potential volume of the current Springbank Offstream Reservoir proposal (which displaces at least 40 landowners and offers zero protection to the majority of flood prone communities. 6. Offers the potential for provision of clean, renewable energy. 7. Enables the SAFE restoration of river paths, parks, campgrounds and trails devastated in the 2013 flood. There is a huge potential here for a worthy investment in the future of water management for Albertans. WE NEED TO GET STARTED ON A FEASIBILITY STUDY NOW. The Federal Government has recently announced $33 billion is available for NEW projects that "show a benefit to the environment - reducing greenhouse gas emissions and IMPROVING RESILIENCY against natural disasters."
