On June 2nd, 2020 Ontario Premier Doug Ford made the following comment to reporters

"Thank god we're different from the United States and we don't have the systemic, deep roots they've had for years" - Premier Ford

Premier Ford was referring to systemic racism in the United States.  This suggests the premier doesn't believe Ontario has a systemic racism problem.

Unfortunately, Premier Ford is wrong - Canada and Ontario are steeped in systemic deep-rooted racism.

  • Ontario has indigenous communities without clean drinking water
  • Ontario was home to 15 residential schools which was a key tool is genocide against the indigenous people of this country
  • Indigenous Peoples (including First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples) are overrepresented among the homeless population in virtually all urban centres in Canada.
  • 1 in 5 racialized families lives in poverty in Canada, as opposed to 1 in 20 non-racialized families.
  • Ontario and its major city of Toronto have a history of violence involving people of colour. GTA From police shootings to protests over anti-Black racism: Toronto’s last three decades of racial controversy

Ontario and Canada's history of racism run deep.  For systemic racism to be eliminated it must first be acknowledged by white people, by politicians and people in power.

Premier Ford's assertion that deep-rooted racism doesn't exist in this country shows that he doesn't know what systemic racism looks like.

  • We call on Doug Ford to take back his comments that systemic racism isn't "systemic and deep-rooted" in Ontario and Canada and acknowledge the reality of People of Colour in this province and in this country.
  • We call on Doug Ford to work with leaders from Black Live Matter and other organizations that support the rights of People of Colour in this province to identify and help eliminate systemic racism.
