The Issue
Hello, my name is Jasper. I am a transgender/enby teen in the state of FL. As a lot of others are aware, especially folks that are being targeted by these laws, denying us our right to ourselves. No, I am not talking about HB 379 (Cellphone ban) I am speaking about HB 1557. It's deemed as the Parental Rights in Education or more widely known, the "Don't Say Gay" law. The statute states: Parental Rights in Education: Requires district school boards to adopt procedures that comport with specific provisions of law for notifying student's parent of specified information; requires such procedures to reinforce fundamental right of parents to make decisions regarding upbringing & control of their children; prohibits school district from adopting procedures or student support forms that prohibit school district personnel from notifying parent about specified information or that encourage student to withhold from parent such information; prohibits school district personnel from discouraging or prohibiting parental notification & involvement in critical decisions affecting student's mental, emotional, or physical well-being; prohibits classroom discussion about sexual orientation or gender identity in certain grade levels; requires school districts to notify parents of healthcare services; authorizes parent to bring action against school district to obtain declaratory judgment; provides for additional award of injunctive relief, damages, & reasonable attorney fees & court costs to certain parents.
In simple terms, it means parents have complete control over their children, which also means we need a consent form to get our preferred name called and prefered pronouns are not allowed if they don't align with your sex at birth. I was able to get it changed easily, but others do not have it that way. This causes a child to not be able to feel safe at school and be exposed to extreme transphobia and violence at home and outool. It excuses transphobia, misgendering, deadnaming, and bullying towards transgender children. This violates the 1st amendment which states Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. It also violates the 9th amendment which states that the enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people. It violates many others, as it feels we are being stripped of our basic rights as human beings.
The reason I am making this petition is because I want to do a march, and start a county or statewide walkout. This needs to be big, and make it to the news, Spread the word, don't let our voices be silenced.
