Prioritize Pedestrian Safety Along Mission Rd

The Issue

Sign this petition if you want the Prairie Village City Council and Mayor to make pedestrian safety along Mission Road between 71st and 75th Streets a priority in the city's 2016 budget.

The stretch of Mission Rd between 71st St and 75th St is a safety concern for many Prairie Village residents as the sidewalks are frequently used by neighborhood students and families, people accessing the Prairie Village shops, and joggers.

Evidence suggests this stretch of Mission Rd is unsafe: 1. A car accident the end of February resulted in a car leaving the road and crossing the west sidewalk between 74th St and 73rd Terr. Shawnee Mission East students were nearby and the accident occurred minutes before St Ann school let out. There is a history of accidents in this area, so this does not appear to be an isolated event. 2. The traffic sergeant stated in email correspondence the traffic unit patrolled this area of Mission Rd for 5 hours in a 30 day period and wrote 28 tickets in those 5 hours which is one ticket approximately every 12 minutes. This seems to indicate the area is prevalent for speeding cars and unsafe driving.

We believe the solution to the unsafe sidewalk condition is reconfiguring Mission Rd. In a phone conversation with the Director of Public Works, he stated reconfiguring Mission Rd north of 75th St to three lanes with a dedicated turn lane is possible considering the amount of traffic. This would allow for more space between the west sidewalk and the street and would reduce the ability of cars to speed in the area.  Both of these benefits would improve the safety of the many pedestrians using this stretch of sidewalk.

You can support this initiative by contacting your Prairie Village city council representatives and the Mayor and signing this petition prior to the April 13th prioritization council meeting. Supporters are also encouraged to attend the April 13th council work session at 5:30pm at Prairie Village City Hall, 7700 Mission Road, Prairie Village, KS 66208.
