Rebecca Courtright started this petition to Powhatan County Board of Supervisors

At a Powhatan County Board of Supervisor's meeting, District 3 representative Mike Byerly made comments that dismissed the lived experiences of BIPOC when he stated that racism isn't an issue in Powhatan. He has launched a concerted campaign to share misinformation regarding efforts made by PCPS to be more inclusive. While it is within his right to ask questions, he has used social media as a tool to cause division within our community.

Mr. Byerly stated “I don’t see racism as a problem. We can get along. We’ve gotten along in this county for a long time --it was a good situation as far as I’m concerned, and I think it still is today.”

He also stated, "Because when you start getting into the curriculum, then you start asking yourself what everybody is seeing on TV now adays. You know, what are we getting? Are we getting an education? Are we getting an ideology? Are we- the word that is used very frequently now a days is critical race theory (CRT), are we into culture wars, social justice, I hear a term diversity, inclusive and equity often, Black Lives Matters, wokeness, I hear all of these things and I think most of you, who at least pay attention to stuff I put on Facebook, know that I am concerned about that."

We request that Mr. Byerly offer a public apology and acknowledgement that his statements dismissed the lived experiences of Black Powhatan residents and other residents who have experienced discrimination on any level, in Powhatan County.
