Poverty and Hunger in Tondo, Manila.

The Issue

The Tondo is the capital city's biggest slum. It has a high rate of poverty since there aren't enough regular, respectable jobs, and social services like health and education are difficult to access. Tondo is a collection of temporary housing units constructed on a dump site and is known as one of the worst slums in the country. And just because of poverty, many children experience health issues due to poor sanitation conditions. Common diseases in this area include acute upper respiratory infection, acute bronchitis, presumed tuberculosis, diarrhea, and pneumonia.

If things change in Tondo, Manila, the community can expect a significant turnaround. According to a study by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), a 10% increase in household income can lead to a 7% reduction in poverty rates. Additionally, a report by the World Bank notes that investing in education and healthcare can reduce poverty by up to 20%. Furthermore, a case study by Project PEARLS, a non-profit organization working in Tondo, showed that providing access to clean water, sanitation, and education can reduce poverty rates by up to 30%. Conversely, if things stay the same, the poor people in Tondo Manila would experience such a bad environment and bad health and education, and probably it would cause them to have a severe disease because of their unhealthy lifestyle. Embracing change can break the cycle of poverty, offering hope for a better future.

Through spreading awareness, we are hoping that we will be able to uplift their conditions and spread hopeful vibes knowing that people are taking steps to help them conquer their challenges. Let's make an organization for them. Let us help them to overcome the poverty they are facing. Let us support both immediate nutritional needs and locally led, long-term solutions through a variety of programs.
