Nous, spectateurs, cinéphiles, professionnels de l’image et passionnés de cinéma, demandons l’ouverture en France d’au moins une salle équipée d’un véritable système IMAX 70mm, conforme aux standards les plus élevés de projection argentique grand format.
LE CONSTAT :
Aujourd’hui, la France, pourtant un des berceaux du cinéma, et qui abrite actuellement le cinéma le plus fréquenté au monde (UGC Ciné Cité Les halles), ne possède aucune vraie salle IMAX en 70mm.
Dans l ‘état actuel des choses, il faut se rendre à Montpellier pour pouvoir profiter de la seule salle IMAX de France en exploitation commerciale proposant le véritable format de 1:43 en projection numérique, et la seule façon de pouvoir profiter de la puissance d’une pellicule 70mm est de se rendre soit à Londres, soit en République Tchèque.
Pourtant, très récemment encore, le 26 février 2026, Giovanni Dolci, Chief Commercial Officer d’IMAX, déclarait chez BoxOffice Pro : « La France s’est classée au 8e rang de nos marchés en 2025, ce qui montre son importance au sein de notre réseau. L’exemple d’Avatar : De feu et de cendres est éloquent : la France a été le troisième territoire le plus performant au monde pour ce film en IMAX », ou encore :« Nous avons ouvert sept nouvelles salles en France en 2025, ce qui est un record absolu pour nous sur une seule année. »
Comment peut-on faire un constat aussi dithyrambique et optimiste, tout en laissant les specateurs Français lésés?
Le 17 juillet 2026, sortira en salles The Odyssey de Christopher Nolan, premier long-métrage au monde tourné entièrement en IMAX 70mm à 15 perforations, marquant un tournant historique pour le cinéma. Il ne pourra pourtant pas être diffusé en France dans son format de prédilection, choisi par un des plus grands réalisateurs actuels.
POURQUOI CETTE DEMANDE EST-ELLE ESSENTIELLE ?
