Postpone the release of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom to improve it like a real Zelda game

The Issue

On Feb 08 we had the release of the second trailer for the game The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom. I'm a huge Nintendo fan (I've had NES, SNES, N64, Wii, DS and currently have 3DS, WiiU and Switch) and I'm a huge fan of The Legend of Zelda series, where I've played almost every game (just a few for handhelds I didn't play until now) and was very excited about the idea of having a sequel to the last major game released, The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild, which was a wonderful game and a huge game changer in the gaming industry. However, when I saw the second trailer for the upcoming game, some concerns came to my mind (and it was the first time that this happened to me when I saw a trailer for a Zelda game) and I confirmed browsing the internet that several fans also had the same concerns and lack of hype after the second trailer. Because of this, thinking of all the fans of the franchise, who have been waiting for 6 years for this new game to come out, I make this petition so that no one ends up being disappointed with the game's release.

The last main title of the franchise released, Breath of the Wild, was a critical and public success and was a watershed in the franchise, it was a legitimate revolution, but like every revolution it is not born perfect. There are some points of improvement opportunities in the game that everyone hopes to see in a direct sequel. I will list them:

  1. Story: Breath of the Wild has virtually no story. The story has already happened and the player ends up learning about it through the mechanic of recovering the character's memories. This was established as a way for the exploration mechanic to be used to the fullest, as without story, the player could do what they want, where they want, however they want. But this concept will not work twice. The previous game, Skyward Sword, had one of the most elaborate stories, where the player really felt empathy for the characters and even the main character, even though he was silent, "spoke" through his facial expression. In the Tears of the Kingdom trailer we have an interesting narrative, but if it is reduced to a great cutscene at the beginning and another at the end, it will not work, it will be disappointing. For the game to be successful, the player needs to live this new story throughout the journey, as in Skyward Sword, and mixing in a balanced way with exploration and freedom mechanics;
  2. Dungeons: A constant mechanic and hallmark of the series were the dungeons. In Breath of the Wild, again thinking about raising the element of exploration, dungeons were eliminated and replaced by shrines, which are simpler challenges, but highly numerous and spread across the game map (in an exchange of quality for quantity). In addition, they all have the same aesthetic, which makes it somewhat repetitive, despite the challenges being different. This is the least important element for me of the three, but I've seen a lot of people complaining about it, so it's being brought up here. Not bringing the dungeons back would be repeating Breath of the Wild and as stated before, repeating the same formula will not work. With all the learning from the previous game, it's time to bring dungeons back in a new, more modern and revolutionary way. Bringing the dungeons with unique characteristics, unique aesthetics and with the whole concept of freedom and exploration, would be the evolution that the series and the new game need to succeed. It would be to the liking of all players;
  3. Overworld: Again in Breath of the Wild, we have exploration and total freedom as key gameplay elements and because of that we have a world where we can go, explore and do whatever we want, but for this mechanic to work, the world ends being a large wasteland. The story element helps to justify such an empty game map, but as I've mentioned in the other threads, it won't work. Placing the character alone in the world again, where it seems that there is only him, will not be interesting for any player and from what we saw in all the trailers that came out, this concept remains. I believe this is the most important topic, because if the empty world concept continues, Tears of the Kingdom will be totally disappointing for all players (and perhaps less profitable for Nintendo). This is the most important point to evolve compared to the previous game. As it is a direct sequel, all of us players want to see and experience the world we saved in the previous adventure, we want to experience the consequences of our actions, in a living world, with villages and towns, with more than 5 or 6 NPCs together, but several having their own routines. There are older games that manage to give us this feeling of a more alive world, like the AI of some NPCs in Cyberpunk (a game with a great concept that might not have been disappointing if it had been postponed for improvements) or the cities of The Witcher 3 that really give you the feeling that it has a life of its own. And we know that Nintendo can go further and evolve these concepts.We want to have the experience of caring for this living world and its countless inhabitants in order to want to protect them from the new threat.
  • There are some other points of criticism on the internet, such as the weapon breaking mechanic (which may have already been eliminated/fixed, but which we cannot see in the trailer) or the satire comparing it to the game Banjo & Kazzoie: Nuts & Bolts, but I preferred to stick to the three above for now.

Every game in the Zelda franchise is unique, has its own characteristics and identity. Even Majora's Mask which is chronologically a sequel, with the same character from Ocarina of Time, made in the same engine as the said game, is a game with its own personality and evolution of mechanics and we don't see that in the Tears of the Kingdom trailers.

In short, a number of fans and gamers alike are concerned that the sequel to (perhaps) the best The Legend of Zelda game will fall short. As many say on the internet, it looks like a big DLC that will charge the price of a full game. Nintendo is a company that always wants to deliver the best experiences and also aims to make a profit, after all it is how the company grows and we players want to pay for a product that meets our expectations. If Tears of the Kingdom is released as it has been presented so far, it is likely that neither Nintendo's goal nor the players/consumers' goal will be achieved. In the past, other games in the Zelda franchise have already been postponed and ended up delivering wonderful games for their time, such as Twilight Princess or even Breath of the Wild which was sensational at its launch, but which if it is simply replicated with a different backstory, it could end up being disastrous. Nobody wants this game to be like the recent Sonic Frontiers, a game that was also asked by the community to be delayed for improvements, but it was released on the date and ended up being an averaged game with a 7.1 score. We've already waited for Tears of the Kingdom to come out, so we might as well wait a little longer for us to have the game Nintendo really can make and the game we really want to buy.Therefore, we ask that the release of Tears of the Kingdom be delayed and the game be improved based on fan concerns, among other things, and be released when it no longer feels like Breath of the Wild DLC, but rather be a game with its own characteristics that really evolves what has already been revolutionized in the previous game.
