Stop using cardboard cereal packaging cartons

Stop using cardboard cereal packaging cartons
The Issue
Who loves beginning their day with a bowl of cereal for breakfast, or sometimes even ending it with one for dinner or an evening snack? According to statistical data, just about everyone! The average American consumes between 10-11lbs of cereal annually, and for some of us, that number is much higher. Almost half of all US citizens begin each day with a bowl of cereal. Cereal itself comes mostly in ink printed cardboard packaging. This packaging is extremely expensive and wasteful, when taking into account the fuel/energy requirements and costs, as well as waste byproducts necessary to produce the ink printed cardboard containers; when compared to less expensive and more eco-friendly bag packaging. Specifically, plastic bag packaging uses 75% less material, saves trillions of thermal energy units, tons of fuel and waste byproduct by millions of pounds annually. This would mean less cost to manufacture cereal box packaging, which could lower consumer costs on cereal itself, as well as less waste and stress on the planet we consumers call home. Currently, only a few companies use plastic bag packaging. This petition is to encourage Kellogg's, Post, General Mills, Quaker and Kashi, the major boxed cereal manufacturers in the United States, to bag the boxes and begin using cereal bags instead. With the current state of our planet's overtaxed natural resources, as well as ever-conscionable consumer pocketbooks, this switch would be beneficial for everyone involved, people and Mother Earth alike.
