Take down the article on Madison Wheeler and publish an apology to the Wheeler family.

The Issue

Madison Wheeler, a 20 year old woman, died in a car accident on the 6th of April at Johns Island, South Carolina. Andrew Knapp, the reporter who wrote this article, listed out everything irrelevant to the accident but instead published facts such as how she was at a bar prior to the accident, open container charges from April 2011 and pictures from her Facebook displaying her with alcohol. The picture of Wheeler in the article was also extracted from the Inmate Search of Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center.

The article even stated that "it would be a while before investigators learn the results of toxicology tests on Wheeler's blood". Alcohol might not have even been the factors of Wheeler's death but regardless that is no excuse to slander the name of someone who went through something tragic and to have their family members see something disgusting published about their lost one.

Friends and Family of Madison Wheeler and the community in Charleston are completely disgusted of this article as this does not show how Wheeler is. Her name has been slandered by Knapp and Post & Courier carelessly published the article without knowing what was said about Wheeler.

This petition can also show the journalism industry to review articles with fact checks before publishing them.

Update - 10:49pm 4/7/2014

Post & Courier has removed half of what was written in the article. However, no apology has been written towards the Wheeler family.

Update - 1:43pm 4/8/2014

Post & Courier has removed Madison's mugshot. However, no apology has still been written towards the Wheeler family.
