Postpone Portland State University’s Class of 2020 Commencement

The Issue

With the news from Interim President Stephen Percy that commencement will be held virtually, we demand PSU to postpone it. The class of 2020 has waited years for the opportunity to walk across the stage in front of family, friends, and colleagues that have supported us emotionally, mentally, and financially along the way. For the first-generation students that make up 37% of the graduating class, it would be the first time our family would witness a college graduation. It is more than the act of receiving a diploma, but concludes years of hard work, dedication, and sacrifice. Graduating virtually does not hold a candle to it.

Other universities have already postponed their commencement including UC Berkeley and Boston University, with president Robert A. Brown conveying that a virtual commencement, “... is not seen as a fitting substitute.”

Since the class of 2020 is unique in being the first class in recent history to have their commencement cancelled or moved online, unique alternatives should therefore be considered. Many prospective graduates have innovative solutions and opinions on the matter, and we highly encourage them to be taken into consideration.

We acknowledge the severity of the COVID-19 pandemic and the steps needed to flatten the curve. It is possible that a June commencement would still be in the midst of this pandemic. Therefore, we ask that the option of walking at a postponed commencement be provided, possibly in addition to the virtual option. Updates as to when it will be held could be provided in the coming months when the COVID-19 situation becomes more clear.
