Save 7707 SE Alder

The Issue

It has become all too common place that big developers are dramatically changing the face of Portland's historic neighborhoods. A home at immediate risk of demolition is this Victorian farm house at 7707 SE Alder in the Kinzel Park neighborhood of Montavilla. The home was built by Joseph E. McCaslin one of Montavilla's early grocers in 1908.

Despite the home's listing on the City's 1984 Historic Resource Inventory, the owner, Eden Enterprises, has applied for a standard demolition permit with only a 35 day delay. (Eden Enterprises has been affiliated with large developer, Renaissance Homes, on a couple of contentious Portland demolitions as reported by The Portland Chronicle.)

A representative of the company informed a neighbor that the home is to be replaced by 10 condos, but no plans are yet available for review by the neighbors or the Montavilla Neighborhood Association.

Several parties have expressed an interest in buying this historic home to save it and the six large trees that sit on its lot from destruction. We ask that Eden Enterprises please show that they are good neighbors and care about Portland's historic neighborhoods by considering any forthcoming offers from interested buyers.

The greenest house is an existing house, and a city that prides itself on being eco-friendly, should not be allowing numerous historic homes full of old growth lumber to be destroyed. Years of Portland's history now sits in a landfill. Once mature trees that sat on these old lots have been reduced to wood chips making Portland's nickname of Stumptown all too fitting.

Portland IS better than this. Portland DESERVES better than this.

In addition, you can write to our City Council and explain why you think this home's demolition and proposed redevelopment is not in the best interest of the existing neighborhood’s historic character and integrity. Be sure to include your name and address on the letter.

Update: Eden Enterprises has sold the historic home at 7707 SE Alder to Vic Remmers of Everett Custom Homes. Everett applied for a demolition permit on Feb. 8, 2016. A standard 35 day demolition delay would mean the home could be demolished any time after Monday, March 14.

Everett has offered to sell the home for $700,000 which is above the budget of our interested buyer, so we are searching for another buyer and an Oregon land use attorney who would be willing to work pro bono.
